Amazon has been bitten by the solar bug. The electronic commerce and cloud computing company has started implementing large scale plans to go solar. The initiative announced on March 2 will see it turning fulfillment and sorting facility rooftops into solar power plants. Earlier this year, Greenpeace ranked the company behind other tech giants such as Apple, Google and Facebook. But with this initiative, Amazon seems to be heading in the right direction to improve its ranking.
Key points around Amazon’s Solar Initiative:
- Firstly, the plan is to start with installations on 15 buildings in the U.S. this year
- This will generate up to 41 megawatts (MW) of power at facilities in California, New Jersey, Maryland, Nevada, Delaware
- This would provide 80% of the annual energy needs of these buildings
- Finally, in the long term, Amazon plans to deploy solar systems on 50 fulfillment and sortation centers globally by 2020
