Bengaluru residents to face almost a 5% hike in electricity bills from June 2019
And this is the case for NOT JUST BENGALURU, but also for many districts in Karnataka. They include Chikkaballapura, Kolar, Davanagere, Tumakuru, Chitradurga and Ramanagara. It is so because BESCOM also supplies electricity to these districts. Along with these districts, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi and Gulbarga will also be facing the same crisis come June 2019.
On 24th May 2019, KERC announced a 33 paise per unit hike to be levied on BESCOM customers. This effectively means that the electricity expenses of households will increase by an approximate 4.9% on average for domestic users.
Think 33 paise is too much ?
BESCOM was initially hoping for a hike of Rs 1.01 per unit, but this brought a lot of public opposition. There was also outrage about the frequent power outages affecting the city.
BESCOM attributes this hike to its necessity for keeping up with the purchase and transmission costs. This hike follows a similar hike that happened back in October 2018, which was the second hike of that year. The only difference being that the October 2018 hike was less than half of the hike issued for June 2019. However, the hike of October 2018 attributed itself to the rising price of coal. The exponential rise of renewable sources, like Solar Rooftop Systems in the residential sector, has eradicated many issues.
Presently, customers using 0-30 units, pay Rs 3.5 per unit and those using 30-100 units pay Rs 4.95 per unit. The tariff for following slabs of 101-200 units and 201-300 units are Rs 6.5 and Rs 7.55 per unit respectively. However, with this hike, these numbers will change and the new numbers can cause an increase in the average by up to 24% annually.
