The Government of India has set a lofty goal of reaching an output of 175 GW through renewable energy by 2022, 100 GW out of this is expected to come from solar power. While the Solar power industry has seen tremendous growth over the past few years it is still a tough task and would be a great achievement if the government manages to pull this off. 40 per cent of the 100 GW i.e. 40 GW is to come from the residential solar sector, currently, the figure stands at 4 GW a mere 10 per cent of the target set by the government. Over the years the government has been trying to promote renewable energy in the housing sector by providing subsidies to homeowners for their solar power setups.
Who takes care of the subsidy for residential solar rooftops?
MNRE, the ministry in charge of handling the renewable energy sector in India offers a subsidy even though electricity is a state subject. This subsidy is common across the country, but over the years individual states’ SNA(State Nodal Agencies) have started offering solar subsidies to homeowners. This is over and above the subsidy being offered by MNRE, making it even cheaper for people to afford solar power.
How much is the residential solar rooftop subsidy?
The MNRE currently offers a subsidy of 40% for setup less than 3 kW, if the setup is greater than 3 kW then the first 3 kW is subsidised to 40% and the rest is subsidised by 20%. This trend follows upto 10 kW, so if I have a 10 kW setup the first 3 kW would get me a subsidy of 40% and the rest of the 7 kW would get a subsidy of 20%. There is no subsidy above 10 kW, so the subsidy for a 11 kW setup would be the same as that of a 10 kW setup.
Procedure to avail solar rooftop subsidy
The next question is how do you avail this subsidy? the answer is you don’t, your service provider eg. zunroof, will do that for you. The subsidy you get is already factored into the final setup cost. Although it is necessary for your service provider to be empanelled in order to claim subsidy from MNRE, therefore if you want the best price you should look for a service provider who is empanelled. The rest of the headache belongs to the service provider, and at zunroof we’re more than happy to help. A physical inspection by the authorities before your net-metering, approval of your setup and you’re good to go. All the subsidies and rebates are taken care of by us when we quote you the final price.
