Suryamitra: The Solar Skill Development Programme by the Government

India has set itself a goal to reach 100 GW of solar capacity (including 40 GW from rooftop solar) by 2022. The ambitious plan will need exceptional execution of policies along with the skill required to cope up with the new solar technologies. This is where the importance of Suryamitra, solar skill development programme comes into play, wherein people get to learn the solar skills and eventually play their part to achieve the country’s solar goal.

This skill development initiative by MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable) was launched in 2015 with a vision to train 50000 ‘Suryamitras’ in the next five years. The target was achieved in the given time frame.

Background

Under the skill development initiatives, National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), an autonomous institution of the MNRE, is mandated as the nodal agency for implementation of the programme. NISE is the apex National R&D institution in the field of solar energy. The institute is involved in research, training and testing of solar energy technologies and systems.

The programme aims to develop the skills of youth so that they can avail to the opportunities for employment in the growing Solar Energy Power Project’s installation, operation & maintenance in India and abroad. The programme is also designed to prepare the candidates to become new entrepreneurs in the Solar Energy sector. It also aims to further the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Structure of the Programme

The Suryamitra Skill Development Programme incorporates theoretical and practical elements to provide comprehensive training within three months. Following which an assessment will take place and those you get successful will receive certificates

The qualification of participants shall be- ITI / Diploma (Electrical, Electronics, Civil, Mechanical, Fitter, Instrumentation, Welder). Special emphasis to be given to the persons coming from a rural background, unemployed youth, women, SC/ST candidates. The candidates would be provided boarding and lodging facilities at the training centre by the TP. At the end of the course, a proper assessment shall be made and certificates shall be issued by the Skill Council of Green Jobs.

The silk development programme consists of laboratory experimentation, classroom exercises, software simulations and other audio-visual aids. Even the host institute organises the placement drive.

Surya Mitra App

The GPS based Surya Mitra Mobile App is currently available in Google play store, which can be downloaded and used across India. This App is a high-end technology platform which can handle thousands of calls simultaneously and can efficiently monitor all visits of Suryamitra’s. The trained Suryamitra’s who opts for entrepreneurship have joined in the Mobile App in several states. These Suryamitras are once again sensitized by NISE on soft skills Customer Relations Management, Punctuality and are now ready to deliver the services.

Admission

Students may check the eligibility criteria and proceed to apply online or offline, based on the particular host institute. A list of all the host institutions available for each year may be found at the official website. The selection of applicants for admission rests with the host institutions. They are required to submit a final list of trainees admitted to the NISE or respective state nodal agencies of MNRE. Women, unemployed youth and candidates from rural areas and SC/ST communities shall also be given preference in the selection process
