Bringing a huge wave of happiness among millions of farmers across India, the Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, recently announced a major initiative towards creating an additional stream of income for farmers through solar power generation.
During her budget speech for 2020-21 on Saturday, the FM announced that 20 lakhs farmers across India will be provided solar pumps in an effort to uplift solar generation on desolate land. She further stated that we also aim 15 lakhs farmers to solarise their grid-connected pumps.
By stating “anna datta can be urja datta” or farmer can become energy generator, the Finance Minister added that this is a major step forward in helping farmers create an additional source of income. If farmers have barren land, now they will be able to set up solar pumps and generate solar energy, which can be further sold to the grid.
Back in 2018, the Gujarat government had launched the Suraksha Kisan Yojana (SKY) scheme that was focused on setting up solar pumps on the farm land and selling surplus power to the grid.
Conclusively, there is no denying that this is a golden opportunity for farmers who have huge barren land to generate some extra cash from their desolate land. However, the details about the remuneration haven’t been made public yet.
